AIIMS MBBS students can now take up research projects

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi has decided to let its undergraduate MBBS students take up research projects and get paid INR 50,000 each for the same. The aim is to help students expand their reach in the field of research at an early stage.

“There will be modifications made to the existing mentorship program for students, such that the undergraduate students are able to develop a bond with the faculty and also acquire basic clinical and research skills,” said an office memorandum issued by AIIMS, Delhi Director M Srinivas, as reported by Indian Express.

The program will be run, monitored and evaluated through the Student Management System. “The newly admitted students may start writing to faculty after 6 months of having joined AIIMS. Students of other semesters are to enrol now. This will enhance the quality of the research and establish connections for future collaborations,” added the memorandum.

To avail of this opportunity, the students will be encouraged to write to faculty that they are interested to be mentored by them.

AIIMS Delhi is all set to start a study on patients with dementia using GPS-based software. The project is funded by the Centre’s Department of Health Research and will run on a pilot basis by the geriatric department of the AIIMS.

As per the reports, the patients will be divided into two categories based on age, the first category will have patients from 40 to 60 years and the second will have patients above 60 years of age. “Patients in the first category (based on age group) will be chosen based on the scale of risk factors like smoking, sugar, obesity, hair loss, head injury, alcohol addiction, diabetes, etc,” a senior doctor explained.

“Both groups will be monitored for the next 3 years, and observations from their behaviour, underlying medical conditions, or comorbidities, and lifestyle will be investigated during this duration,” he said.
