Assam govt plans medical science curriculum in vernacular language

Assam government has directed the Vice-Chancellor of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences to take the initiative of developing the medical science course in the vernacular language.

During the fifth general council meeting of the Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, the Assam government has pushed for developing the medical science course in vernacular language. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr Dhrubajyoti Borah.

While discussing the suggestions made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to develop medical sciences curriculum in vernacular languages in India, the government has assigned the responsibility to VC of the Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences to take the initiative in this regard.

CMO's release stated that after a detailed discussion, the general council took several significant decisions to strengthen the academic environment and bring a strong administrative mechanism at the university. These key decisions included digitalisation of certain services of the university, proper arrangement for inspection of medical colleges to ensure quality services and best practices, the introduction of three-tier fellowship programme of PG level, degree level and special fellowship including dental, nursing etc. The decision was also taken to have a unique identification number of faculties and students and a uniform academic routine for all medical colleges under the university.

The courses offered at Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences includes MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery), BSc (Bachelor of Science, BSc (Post Basic), PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery), MDS (Master of Dental Surgery), MS (Master of Surgery), MSc (Master of Science), MD (Doctor of Medicine), BMLT (Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Technology), BOPTM (Bachelor in Optometry), MPT (Master of Physiotherapy).
