Centre approves 3 new medical colleges for Andhra Pradesh
Union health minister Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar has said that the government has approved 3 new medical colleges for Andhra Pradesh at Piduguralla, Paderu and Machilipatnam.
While replying to a question raised by YSR Congress' Rajya Sabha member Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy on the status of the proposed medical colleges, Union health minister Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar has said that Andhra Pradesh had sent seven proposals to the Centre for setting up of medical colleges at Piduguralla, Paderu, Machilipatnam, Eluru, Markapuram, Pulivendula and Vizianagaram, out of which three were approved at Piduguralla, Paderu and Machilipatnam, as reported by Indian Express.
Ministry of health and family welfare administers a centrally-sponsored scheme for the establishment of new medical colleges attached to existing district/referral hospitals with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing government or private medical college. Under the scheme, she said a total of 157 new medical colleges have been approved in three phases and 71 are already functional.
INR 17,691.08 crore invested in these projects
As per the government release in October last year, the Centre has invested a total of INR 17,691.08 crore on these projects. On completion of these 157 new medical colleges in India, nearly 16000 undergraduate medical seats would be added.
"Under the Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS), the Central Government has also provided about INR 2,451.1 crore for upgradation of existing state government or central government medical colleges to increase MBBS seats in the country. The government of India has relentlessly pursued the aim of cultivating more human resources through Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) that seek to address not only the issues of equity in medical education and but also geographic disparity in availability of medical care," said the official release.
