Representatives from the Association of doctors and the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) convened a meeting with the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, highlighting urgent reforms needed within the medical community.

Mental health emerged as a central concern during discussions, emphasizing the need to address factors such as intense duty hours that adversely affect residents' well-being. The meeting aimed to underscore the importance of alleviating these stressors and fostering a healthier working environment for medical professionals.

The Health Minister, recognizing the gravity of the issues raised, assured prompt attention and resolution to the pressing concerns voiced during the meeting.

The discussions centered on a range of vital points outlined by the new FORDA team (2022-23), including establishment of an Indian Medical Services cadre to oversee bureaucratic decisions and handle administrative affairs in the medical field.

Advocacy for Bond-Free Medical Education, advocating for a uniform policy across states. Proposal for a Healthcare Worker Protection Act to address assaults on doctors while on duty.

Call for Risk Hazard allowance for resident doctors impacted by occupational hazards, along with the provision of mandatory health service cards. Efforts to reduce the number of contractual positions for doctors, promoting regular positions instead.

The association also demanded extension of the tenure of existing Ad-hoc posts to a minimum of six months. As well as proposal to amend the Residency Scheme of 1992 to align with current requirements.

They also demand for salaries of resident doctors to meet or exceed state guidelines. Urging the streamlining of NEET PG entrance exams and enforcing uniform counselling procedures.

They also advocated for an apex body overseeing medical education, aiming to streamline decision-making processes and reduce delays between governing entities.

The associations earnestly appealed to the Health Ministry for immediate attention and proactive steps towards implementing these reforms, significantly impacting the medical sector. The meeting highlighted the pressing need for reforms to create a more conducive and supportive environment for medical professionals nationwide.
