The SC Bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and K Vinod Chandran issued notices to MCC, NMC, the Union of India and the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) Madhya Pradesh. concerning the irregularities and seat blocking in the NEET PG counselling process for admission to PG medical courses.

NEET PG 2024 Supreme Court Hearing

The Supreme Court issued a notice on a plea asking the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) to re-conduct the AIQ (All India Quota)  NEET PG 2024 round 3 counselling process. The plea was filed due to instances of seat blocking caused by delays in completing the second round of state counselling in several states including Madhya Pradesh.
The Supreme Court Bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and K Vinod Chandran issued notices to the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Union of India, and the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) Madhya Pradesh upon petitioner's argument who argued that owing to seat blocking and delay in completion of Madhya Pradesh NEET PG round 2 counselling process, there were fewer seats available in AIQ Round 3 counselling process, and as a result, candidates were assigned lower subject category seats. The senior counsel requested an opportunity for the students to participate in stray counselling.

NEET PG 2024 SC Hearing: Consequence Explained

The petition, filed by three NEET-PG 2024 candidates, requested the Supreme Court to cancel AIQ Round 3 NEET PG counselling and conduct it again. The petition also requests a 4th round of counselling for leftover seats that were blocked by candidates from states where Round II of state counselling has not been completed.

During today’s hearing, Parmeswar, representing the petitioners, mentioned that the structure of NEET-PG counselling requires state rounds to begin only after the AIQ rounds counselling are completed, as AIQ seats are in higher demand. This means the sequence should be AIQ Round I, State Round I, AIQ Round II, State Round II, and so on.

However, two states, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, were unable to complete their Round 2 counselling process. While Rajasthan was granted an extension by the MCC, Madhya Pradesh could not finish its Round 2 counselling before the start of AIQ Round 3 counselling. Now, the Supreme Court will take up the matter for hearing on February 7, 2025.
