Indian medical students stranded in Ukraine: SC asks Attorney General to help in evacuation
The top court of the country has asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to use his office in helping evacuate some Indian medical students stranded in Ukraine near the Romania border.
While taking a note of the submissions of a lawyer that many Indian students are stuck near the Romanian border in freezing cold and the government is not running flights from Romania, a bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana has asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to use his office in the evacuation of the Indian medical students stranded in Ukraine.
The lawyer has said in the court that flights are being operated from Hungary and Poland and not from Romania and many students which also include girls are there without any facility.
“They have been prevented from crossing the border. The temperature there is –7 degrees. They are without food, water or money. Please intervene with the government to evacuate them,” the lawyer pleaded, as reported by The Hindu.
She was part of a group of Indian students based in Odessa, Ukraine. They were trying to get through to neighbouring Moldova, he added.
"We have all sympathies with them. But what can the court do," the bench said, as reported by Telegraph India. The court has asked the top law officer to consider extending help to the stranded Indian students.
PM Modi spoke to Presidents of Russia, Ukraine
Attorney General K K Venugopal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already talked to the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine about the evacuation of Indian nationals.
He said a minister was in Romania helping with the evacuation process. It was strange that Ukraine was not allowing the students to cross the border, he added.
