JNU is all set to offer medical degree programmes in the next three years.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is getting ready to offer medical degree programmes in the next three years. Recently, during its Academic Council (AC) meeting, JNU has passed setting up a medical college and super speciality hospital inside its campus.

The land selected for this medical school is 25 acres in the “southwest corner” of the JNU campus. The estimated budget is Rs 900 crore. Initially, the JNU administration will connect its medical college with any hospital in the 10 Km area of the university. Later on, it will build a 500-bed super speciality hospital. Next, the medical college and super speciality hospital will be expanded within 300 acres of area.

JNU medical college programmes 

The JNU medical college will offer the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctorate of Medicine (DM), Master of Surgery (MS), Master of Chirurgiae (MCH), MD-PhD programmes.

MBBS degree will be divided into three professional parts. After the completion of each professional, the university will conduct an examination. Once the students clear the professional exam only then they will be able to study in the next professional. The graduation programme will have nine semesters. Once these semesters are completed, the students will be required to complete a one-year internship programme. The students and teacher ratio will be as per the international standards which are one teacher on 10 students.

Once the students complete their MBBS degrees, it is mandatory for them to provide services in rural areas.

JNU super speciality hospital details

There will be medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, radiology, biochemistry, microbiology, gynae, paediatrics and pathology departments in the hospital. Also, there will be departments for medical oncology, infectious diseases, organ transplant, surgical oncology, gastro anthology, cardiology, nephrology and others. The hospital will also focus on various researches.

As per University Grants Commission (UGC) rules, initially, every department will have 7 faculties including one professor, two associate professors and four assistant professors. There will be a total of 37 centres which suggests that nearly 259 faculties will be appointed.
