Karnataka High Court has passed a judgement for 17 medical colleges in the state to hand over 212 MBBS seats from the NRI quota to the state government quota for the academic year 2024.

Karnataka High Court on Medical Education

17 private medical colleges in Karnataka that were allegedly engaged in undergraduate medical course seats have been asked by the directorate of medical education. Subsequently, the Karnataka High Court has passed a judgement for these private medical colleges to hand over 212 MBBS seats from their NRI quota to the state government quota for the current academic year.

"Medical colleges in collusion with a select group of students have indulged in manipulating practices to secure admissions. These practices involve the blocking of seats. Such actions not only undermine the sanctity of the admission process but also compromise the quality and integrity of medical education," says Karnataka HC, as reported by TOI.

What is the Case?

In 2018, several medical colleges were involved in seat blocking. Subsequently, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science took action against students who got MBBS seats through unlawful means by refusing their admission and debarred them from appearing in the examination. However, the court further allowed students to write the examination but penalised the colleges and asked them to surrender their seats. As many as 212 seats from 17 colleges have been surrendered and upon complying with the guidelines, the seats will be added to the seat matrix to be announced by the DME.

The DME further asked the National Medical Commission to enforce the court order and not add the seats in Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) counselling; further to inform the individual colleges to renounce those seats to the state govt to possess in the govt seat matrix.
