Madras High Court has stayed the order of the medical admission selection committee that cancelled admissions to a Rajas Dental College in Tamil Nadu.

Following an order of the Union government dated August 2, 2021, the selection committee for medical admission had ordered the cancellation of admission to PG courses at Rajas Dental College in Kavalkinaru, Tirunelveli district on November 2. The order was given as the college exceeded the recommended distance from the tie-up hospital.

After the Union government order, on October 28, 2021, the Dental Council of India had also ordered the cancellation of admissions to this private medical college. The orders stated that the college distance from the tie-up hospital is more than 10 Km and it violated the amended Dental Council of India Regulations, 2006.

The hospital management had approached the Madras HC challenging the admission cancellation order. The college stated that it was established in 1987 and was approved under the 1993 regulations. As per the college, the provisions of 2006 regulations regarding the distance from the tie-up hospital do not apply to it. However, the court noted that prior to the 2006 regulations, the distance was not contemplated to be within 10 Km. Now, the Madras High Court has stayed the order.

The private medical college, Rajas Dental College and Hospital, is affiliated with Tamil Nadu's Dr M.G.R. Medical University. It offers UG (Undergraduate) program BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) and PG (Postgraduate) program MDS (Master of Dental Surgery). Moreover, the college offers a research-level program MPhil across various specializations.
