Maharashtra's resident doctors go on strike from today for better pay

The resident doctors of Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) across Maharashtra have started their strike today for their longstanding demands of creating new posts for senior residents, dearness allowance in accordance with the seventh pay commission, payment of covid service arrears and proper accommodation facilities for all resident doctors.

The central committee of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has issued a final notice yesterday that doctors will work only in emergency and ICUs from Monday onwards and they won't work in the OPDs, IPDs and wards. Over 500 resident doctors in both government medical colleges in Nagpur including GMCH and IGGMCH are on strike, as reported by TOI.

“We are left with no other option but to go on strike because the government is not paying any heed to our just demands,” said Dr Sajal Bansal, head of MARD unit in GMCH Nagpur.

“Doctors will remain present in the college but we won’t work in wards. We will stage a peaceful protest at around 10 am on Monday,” he added.

“One of our big issues is that many assistant professor posts go vacant even as the senior residents are told to join the colleges on the post of tutors. This is a problem given that the post is not even recognised for medical professionals by the National Medical Commission,” said MABARD president Dr Pranav Jadhav, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Demands of Maharashtra's resident doctors on strike

The doctors are demanding the implementation of dearness allowance, and arrears in it since a GR in this regard was issued in 2018, payment of eight months of covid service arrears of junior residents of Nair Hospital, adequate hostel facilities and the creation of more posts.
