MBBS Curriculum Amendment: Maharashtra HC Questions NMC Over Removal of Three Subjects from UG Syllabus
National Medical Commission deleted the subjects Respiratory Medicine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Emergency Medicine from the MBBS curriculum during the latest amendment in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programmes.
MBBS Curriculum: The Maharashtra High Court has asked the National Medical Commission (NMC) to clarify the decision to remove Respiratory Medicine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Emergency Medicine from the MBBS curriculum. Reportedly, the Indian Chest Society and Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation have filed a PIL against NMC for removing three major subjects from the MBBS curriculum.
The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has remarked that the NMC has not learned any lesson from the COVID-19 Pandemic. As per the media reports, The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has cited that "Everyone knew the importance of Respiratory Medicine during covid-19 pandemic". The court also shared that the importance of respiratory medicine was very important during the COVID-19 pandemic as it played an important role in saving the lives of millions.
The division bench of Justice Bharti Bangre and Justics Abhay Mantri seek NMC to file an affidavit explaining the reason for excluding Respiratory Medicine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Emergency Medicine courses despite being important for education purposes.
The Indian Chest Society and Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) also raised that the previous authorities have made these programmes mandatory for the MBBS syllabus. Following the dissolution of the old body i.e. Medical Council of India (MCI), the new guidelines were issued and these three subjects were removed despite being important for educating medicos.
