MBBS student dies reportedly by suicide in Rajasthan

As per reports, an MBBS student in Rajasthan has jumped to her death from the balcony of her hostel. This sums up to 27 such suicide cases by medical students so far this year, the highest in a year.

The body has been kept in a mortuary for an autopsy, which will be done once her parents arrive, as reported by NDTV India.

The deceased student is identified as Sudhanshi Singh, 21. She was a first-year MBBS student at Rajasthan's Dungarpur Medical College. She was found dead near her hostel building with a message scribbled on her palm, that says, "After today I won't make any mistakes, I promise. Sorry, Ma, Papa, Bhai, and Rohit."

More Details

She used to live alone in her hostel room. Before committing suicide, students saw her going to the washroom, and when she came back to her room, she jumped from the balcony. Other students rushed out and found her lying in a pool of blood. Her skull had cracked open from the impact. She was rushed to a hospital, where the doctors pronounced her dead. The hostel authorities alerted the police and informed the parents.

Such cases have highlighted the stressful lives of medical students and aspiring medicos in India, who often take such extreme steps due to academic pressures.

Recently, a 27-year-old female doctor's body was found in her hostel room, along with a handwritten suicide note blaming three senior doctors of the department of anesthesiology. She accused them of “sexual harassment”, “senior toxicity”, and “mental abuse”.

NMC asked for a detailed report on the case and a formal letter was also sent to the State Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) for an independent inquiry.
