NEET 2020: For the Plea Demanding Exam Centres in Gulf Countries, SC Issues Notice Seeking Answers
The Supreme Court seeks answers from the Centre and the Medical Council of India, on plea to allot NEET 2020 exam centres in the Gulf countries.
The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the authorities, demanding an answer from the Central Government and the Medical Council of India (MCI), regarding the allotment of NEET 2020 exam centres in the Gulf countries. The plea, which was filed on July 1 by the parents of NEET 2020 aspirants residing Gulf countries, demands allotment of NEET 2020 exam centres in these countries or postponement of the examination until the threat of COVID-19 pandemic is over.
The case was filed in the Supreme Court after being turned down by the Kerala High Court. The Court declined the PIL stating that it cannot interfere with the decisions made by expert bodies such as NTA and MCI. Following which, the parents moved to the apex court of India, seeking intervention of the court in ensuring the safety of their children while protecting their academic interests.

Nearly 4,000 students from the Gulf countries appear for NEET every year. There are no exam centres for NEET 2020 outside India, which is why these students have to travel to India to appear for the examination. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant travel bans, these students may not be able to fly to India in time for NEET 2020.

Though the examination has been postponed to September 13, international travel is still banned in India. The only means for these students to reach India, to appear for NEET 2020 are the Vande Bharat flights. However, these flights are meant for Indian citizens who are distressed, such as migrant labourers and stranded students. With no means of transportation available, these students do not want to miss this attempt at NEET, and demand centres in Gulf countries to ensure that their academic interests are protected from the pandemic.
