NEET PG Counselling 2021: Supreme Court to resume hearing on EWS, OBC quota today
After getting adjourned on Wednesday, Supreme Court will resume hearing today, January 6, on the plea challenging the OBC and EWS reservation, meanwhile FORDA has filed impleadment application in court seeking to join as a party in the case.
The case challenging the 27% Other Backward Class (OBC) and 10% Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) reservation for medical admissions was adjourned on Wednesday, the Supreme Court will resume the hearing today. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has filed an impleadment application in the court seeking to join as a party in the case.
The Centre had announced the reservation on July 29 and later the top court had issued notice on plea challenging the reservations. The ongoing case has delayed the counselling process including National Eligibility cum Entrance Test UG and PG Counselling 2021 for All India Quota (AIQ) seats in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery), MD (Doctor of Medicine), MS (Master of Surgery), and MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) courses.
The case was scheduled for hearing on January 6 earlier but after Centre's repeated request, the court heard the case a little earlier on January 5.
Senior Advocate Shyam Divan on behalf of the petitioners argued that the new system of reservation must be adopted from next year. He said the July 29 notification that approved the reservation is like "changing the rules of the game midway" as the policy was introduced after the exams were notified.
NEET PG Counselling 2021 for 50% AIQ seats was scheduled to begin on October 25 last year but got delayed due to the pending case in Supreme Court. The unprecedented delay in postgraduate medical admissions resulted in a nationwide strike of resident doctors demanding to expedite the counselling process. The Union Health Mansukh Mandaviya had assured FORDA that the minister will try for an early hearing on the case so that the counselling process can start immediately.
