Pharmacy student arrested in Maharashtra for provocative tweet on Sharad Pawar

The Dindori police in Nashik have reportedly arrested a 21-year-old pharmacy student for tweeting provocative statements against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar.

On May 11, 2022, Nikhil Bhamre posted a comment against Pawar, stating, “Time has come for Baramati’s Gandhi…to create Baramati’s Nathuram Godse,” he tweeted in Marathi as Pawar hails from Baramati in Maharashtra. The NCP leader and state Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad noticed the tweet and tagged it to police handles in the state and asked them to take action against the pharmacy student.

Nikhil Bhamre has a clean track record

The police have found that the student has not any prior criminal record. He belongs to a farmer's family and was living in a rented accommodation to pursue his studies.

As per police, earlier he was affiliated with a right-wing group but the police have not revealed the group's name. Reportedly, after Bhamre knew that police were in lookout for him, he deleted all his social media accounts. His phone is seized by the police and they are trying to retrieve his chats.

He was booked under Sections 153 A and 500 (defamation), 501 (printing or engraving defamatory matter), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
