Punjab government limits referrals to PGIMER

Due to an increase in the referral of patients from government run facilities in districts to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) through 108 emergency ambulance services, the Managing Director of Punjab Health Systems Corporation has directed all civil surgeons to avoid unnecessary referrals to PGIMER and GMCH.

Moreover, many of these patients were not even admitted to these two hospitals and were sent back which caused unnecessary journeys for these patients and created a void at the base location of the ambulance for 10-12 hours, as reported by TOI.

108 ambulance service is not meant for inter-facility, says govt

The government has told the civil surgeons that a 108 ambulance service is an emergency response service and is not meant for inter-facility. Going forward, the civil surgeons will refer patients to the nearest government medical colleges and the medical colleges can refer patients to PGIMER and GMCH-32.

The medical college in Amritsar is attached to hospitals in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala and Pathankot and the medical college in Faridkot is attached to the hospitals in Faridkot, Bathinda, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Moga and Muktsar.

The state reportedly has 270 ambulances including 245 basic and 25 advanced life support in 108 services equipped with emergency medical equipment.

The ambulance service attends 500 emergencies each day on a median and is operating since 2011 in a public-private partnership model.
