The petitioners said in the Delhi High Court that reducing of percentile does not necessarily mean that merit will be compromised as percentile is different from percentage.

Reducing NEET PG counselling 2021 percentile not likely to compromise merit

Three MBBS graduates had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking relaxation in the cut off percentile prescribed by National Medical Commission (NMC) this year for the NEET PG counselling 2021. The petitioners said that lowering of percentile does not necessarily mean compromising the merit as percentile is different from percentage.

Earlier the Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Navin Chawla had observed that under the percentile system there is the scope of many meritorious students being left out merely because they do not fit in the percentile cut-off while many seats in the medical colleges go vacant.

The Supreme Court had also said, "Not filling up all the medical seats is not a solution to the problem. Moreover, seats being kept vacant results in huge financial loss to the management of the educational institutions apart from being a national waste of resources. Interest of the general public is not subserved by seats being kept vacant."

NEET PG cut-off percentile system puts doubt on education system

The petitioners' counsel submitted in Delhi High Court that the NEET PG candidates are qualified MBBS doctors and by employing the percentile system, the examination authority is putting doubt on its own education system, as reported by Live Law.

By leaving out meritorious candidates based on the fact that do not qualify the 50 percentile, the examination authority is violating their fundamental rights, said the advocate.

The Bench suggested that the correct yardstick perhaps would be to apply percentage instead of percentile.
