Allegations of Widespread Paper Leak Could Impact 24 Lakh Students; IIT Delhi Committee to Submit Expert Opinion on Contentious NEET Exam Question

Continuing from Monday, July 22, the Supreme Court of India will resume the hearing on the NEET-UG 2024 case today, amid serious allegations of a paper leak. This ruling could significantly impact nearly 24 lakh students who appeared for the exam.

On July 22, the Supreme Court Bench, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, addressed serious allegations of a paper leak in the NEET-UG 2024 exam. Chief Justice Chandrachud ordered IIT Delhi to form a committee to investigate a contentious question in the exam. This decision affects nearly 24 lakh students who appeared for the NEET-UG 2024 exam. The hearing is set to continue today.

In a previous hearing on July 18, Chief Justice Chandrachud deferred the matter to July 22, requesting a copy of the Bihar police report. The court is currently examining over 40 petitions, including calls for the exam's cancellation, a re-test, and an investigation into alleged irregularities.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Chandrachud, Justices J.B. Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, emphasized the gravity of the situation. Chief Justice Chandrachud raised concerns that the NEET paper leak might have occurred well before the transportation of the question papers to the banks. Contrary to the government's stance that the leak happened on the morning of May 5, limited to small areas in Bihar and Jharkhand, the CJI suggested that if the leak took place on the night of May 4, it must have occurred before the papers were secured in the banks.

"If the NEET paper leak has taken place on the night of May 4, it has not taken place in the vault of SBI or Canara Bank. The leak must have happened much prior to the transportation of the question papers to the banks," stated CJI Chandrachud. He also highlighted the issue of professors not being utilized as problem solvers, unlike students who are frequently engaged for this purpose.

The Supreme Court has sought an expert opinion from IIT Delhi to resolve a contentious question in the NEET-UG 2024 exam. The court has requested IIT Delhi to form a team of three experts to evaluate the question and submit their opinion by July 23, 12 noon.

Over 40 petitions have been filed, including requests for the cancellation of the entire NEET-UG 2024 exam, a re-test to ensure fairness, and an investigation into the alleged irregularities. The bench, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, emphasized that any decision for a re-examination must be based on concrete evidence showing the integrity of the entire test was compromised.
