As per reports, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a new medical college PSP Medical College and Research Institute in Kancheepuram. It will be affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University and student intake for the academic year 2023-24 will be 150 MBBS seats.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that the state had applied for the Centre's permission to start new medical colleges in six districts. More private medical colleges are still awaiting Centre's permission.

"We will start work including construction of buildings only after that," he said, as reported by TOI.

Residents demand to expedite Ariyalur Medical College work

The work at the Ariyalur Medical College is going on for more than two years and now residents and activists are demanding expedited work. The Centre has allocated INR 347 crore for the 700-bed hospital project. The offices and residential buildings are almost complete, and the electrification and road laying are pending for various reasons, as reported by Indian Express.

Also, in the state, Kattankulathur’s SRM Medical College has collaborated with Hospital and Research Centre and King’s College, London (KCL) to undertake major research work in neuro movement disorders, especially in Parkinson’s disease, to help people in Tamil Nadu.
