The West Bengal Health Department has asked all the medical colleges and hospitals across the state to conduct fire mock drills at regular intervals.

Recently, a mishap had happened in the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal, where a fire was broke out in the Covid ward and killed a patient. To prevent any such incident in the future, the West Bengal Health Department has directed all the medical colleges and hospitals in the state to conduct the fire mock drills at regular intervals and all hospital authorities have been asked to upload the fire mechanism related updates on a Whatsapp number floated by the Health Department.

A recent official notification of Government of West Bengal, Health & Family Welfare Department, says, "A designated Deputy Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent (Non-Medical) for Medical College & Hospital/other health institutes up to SSH level and a Specific Deputy CMOH for every health district is already in place to review fire fighting arrangements on a continual basis vide letter no. 95/Secy/H& FW/2021 date 12/05/2021. A Whatsapp group has been created with all these officials for monitoring of the conduct of mock-drill for fire safety preparedness (along with photos) progress of ongoing works on fire safety and renewal of certificates in time. Whenever applications are submitted for fire safety certificates, the AIN (Application Identification Number) of the F & ES department portal to be intimated in the Whatsapp group for follow up at the department level."

The notification also stated that the Department to various medical colleges and health institutions has provided sufficient funds for the plan related to fire fighting arrangements. The process of application for fire safety certificates including renewal of the same has to be expedited. 

The government has once again urged all the government hospitals across the state to conduct fire safety audits immediately in co-operation with PWD and officials of the Fire & Emergency Services Department to ensure safety and security of all patients, staff as well as protection of hospital equipment.
