President Droupadi Murmu will be attending the 12th Convocation of the Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University (MSCB University), formerly North Orissa University on May 9. On April 5, the university requested the President to attend its convocation as chief guest and deliver the convocation address on a suitable date convenient to the President.

Sampada Mehta, private secretary to the President of India, in a letter to MSCB University’s vice-chancellor Santosh Kumar Tripathy said that the President will be pleased to grace the convocation at 10am-11am on May 9 at Baripada. “We are happy that the President will visit our university and deliver a convocation address. We are geared up to complete the preparation for the convocation in time. We will try to make the convocation a memorable one,” said Tripathy.

He said the university is planning to install a bust of President Droupadi Murmu in the university campus. “We have also requested the President’s office to grant permission for this,” he added.
Students of 28 departments of the university will get degrees at the convocation. More than 50 PhD students will get their degrees too. The institution has decided to give honoris causa degrees to five eminent personalities. “So far we have not decided the names. We are in a process to choose the names,” said the vice-chancellor.

To finalise the details, the President's office has asked that the draught minute-by-minute schedule, dais plan, and sample invitation card of the ceremony be sent through the Odisha chief secretary to the deputy military secretary. The institution in the Mayurbhanj region, around 100 km from Murmu's home hamlet of Uparbeda, just received an A rating from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). On July 13, 1998, the Odisha government formed it.
