NEET PG 2022 EWS Quota: Supreme Court to hear plea on August 2

Last year, the pending hearing of the NEET PG 2022 EWS Quota plea that challenged the INR 8 lakh income limit for determining the EWS category resulted in the delay of NEET PG 2021 Counselling. Now, the next hearing is scheduled for August 2, 2022.

The Supreme Court has today listed the plea challenging the 10 per cent reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category in government institutes for admissions through NEET-PG 2022 on August 2. The petition was filed by some NEET PG aspirants last year.

A revisit to NEET PG 2022 EWS Quota case

The top court had asked the Centre to explain why this criterion is set, which the government earlier justified and then decided to revisit the criteria. The Centre established a three-member committee to revisit the criteria, which included Ajay Bhushan Pandey, former finance secretary, VK Malhotra, member secretary, ICSSR, and Sanjeev Sanyal, Principal Economic Adviser to the Centre.

The committee's report suggested that the current limit of family income of INR 8 lakh to qualify as avail of the EWS reservation benefit be retained, calling it “reasonable for the purpose”. 

It's been a year since the court case on the matter is going on and this year a final judgement is expected.

Last year, Supreme Court maintained the constitutional validity of the quota for the OBC and EWS categories in the NEET PG counselling during the hearing in January 2022.
