NEET PG 2022 EWS Quota: Supreme Court to hear plea today

While NEET PG 2022 counselling is expected to start from September 1, the Supreme Court will today hear the plea that challenged the INR 8 lakh income limit for determining the EWS category for NEET PG counselling. The top court has listed the plea for hearing today. The petition was filed by a few NEET PG aspirants last year and it also challenged the 10% reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category in government institutes for admissions through NEET-PG 2022.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is yet to announce the official dates for NEET PG counselling 2022 and before the counselling begins again NEET PG 2022 candidates started asking clarity on this criteria. Last year this case and other pending cases related to NEET PG resulted in the delay in starting NEET PG 2021 counselling.

NEET PG 2022 EWS Quota: What happened so far?

It all started when the court asked the Centre to explain why this limit of INR 8 lakh is set to determine the EWS criteria. The Central government first justified their decision but later on decided to revisit the criteria. For this purpose, the government established a three-member committee including Ajay Bhushan Pandey, former finance secretary, VK Malhotra, member secretary, ICSSR, and Sanjeev Sanyal, Principal Economic Adviser. The committee's report suggested that the current limit set is β€œreasonable for the purpose”.

In 2021, the top court maintained the constitutional validity of the quota for the OBC and EWS categories in the NEET PG counselling during the hearing in January 2022.
