A cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved a proposal of opening a new medical college.
Odisha Medical Colleges: The Odisha Government on December 9, 2020, announced that it will set up a new medical college in Kandhamal district and a 650-bedded teaching hospital for the existing institute in Koraput district. Earlier, a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved a proposal in this regard.
After the Cabinet meeting, through a video message, Parliamentary Affairs Minister B K Arukha said, "The state government decided to construct a 100-seated new state-run medical college and teaching hospital at Phulbani (in Kandhamal district) and a 650-bedded teaching hospital for the medical college at Koraput on turn-key basis,"
According to a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the Chief Minister's Office, "Odisha Cabinet headed by CM Naveen Patnaik approved construction of two new Medical College & Teaching Hospitals in #Kandhamal & #Koraput districts at a cost of ₹680 Cr." The tweet further talked about the vision of the project and stated, "The hospitals will give a boost medical education and cater to healthcare needs of the people in the region." Earlier, The state earlier had only three state-run medical colleges and the BJD government has set up six more such institutes in the last two decades, Minister Arukha said. The cabinet also cleared two rural piped water-supply projects worth Rs 724 crore for Bargarh district. Meanwhile, The Odisha Higher Education Department decided to cancel the conduction of the undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) examinations for the 2020-21 session. According to the reports, the decision to cancel the UG and PG exams is taken due to the “prevailing COVID-19 pandemic related dislocation”.
