SC asks explanation on over 633 MDS admissions done in Karnataka beyond deadline
The Supreme Court of India has asked Karnataka medical education secretary to give the reasons for which it breached the deadline for over 633 MDS admissions.
The top court of India has asked the Karnataka medical education secretary to explain the circumstances in which it breached the deadline for admission of over 633 Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) students.
The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna said, "We direct the Secretary, Medical Education, of the state government to file an affidavit explaining the circumstances in which the state of Karnataka breached the deadline of November 20, 2021," as reported by NDTV.
The court has asked the secretary to file an affidavit within one week and has also directed the Centre and Dental Council of India to file their affidavits in the meantime. The court has observed that the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had extended the deadline for completing admissions for MDS 2021-22 session from November 10, 2021, to November 20, 2021, and the Dental Council of India had adopted a similar deadline.
Senior advocate Shyam Divan, on behalf of petitioner institutions, submitted that 633 students have been admitted by Karnataka albeit beyond the cut-off date and if these admissions are not regularized at the present stage, the colleges in the state will have no students for three years.
Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj on behalf of Centre and advocate Gaurav Sharma, representing the Dental Council of India, submitted that the state was aware that the date was extended till November 20, 2021.
The court has said, "We find it necessary that the State of Karnataka must explain the circumstances in which it carried out admissions beyond the deadline of November 20, 2021."
