The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced major changes for CUET UG 2025. One of the key changes is allowing candidates to select any domain subject irrespective of their Class 12th subjects. This major change raises questions about its fairness and highlights its potential impact on students, admissions, and cutoff trends. UGC proposed a draft regarding the changes in exam duration, subject choice, number of questions, mode of examination, Reduction in the number of domain subjects, etc. UGC has invited feedback on proposed changes. Stakeholders can submit the feedback till December 26, 2024.
CUET UG 2025 Changes: Impact of Subject Choice Flexibility
Choosing any CUET subject would empower students to explore interdisciplinary education, allowing them to pursue the subjects of their interest or choice. However, this will come with both benefits and potential challenges:
CUET UG Changes: Opportunities
- Universities are likely to receive a pool of applicants from diverse academic backgrounds.
- Students can explore subjects beyond their traditional academic streams, fostering holistic and diverse knowledge.
CUET UG Changes: Challenges
- Students opting for unfamiliar subjects will require additional preparedness and resources.
- With all questions being compulsory, students may face increased pressure to perform well in every question, leaving little room for error.
- While a uniform exam duration of 60 minutes aims to standardises the process, it may not account for the varying difficulty levels across different CUET domain subjects.
- CUET accepting universities are likely to revise the evaluation criteria to ensure fairness.
- CUET UG cutoffs will fluctuate with subjects/courses attracting cross-stream interest potentially seeing higher cut-offs.
- Popular disciplines like B.Com, B.A in English Honours might witness a spike in competition with students from varied streams applying for limited seats.
