Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said on Wednesday that to honouring the late MS Swaminathan, Thanjavur-based Agricultural College and Research Institute will renamed after the iconic scientist.

Moreover, an award will be instituted in Swaminathan's name to honour toppers in plant propagation and genetics at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, he added in the Assembly.

He announced this to honour Swaminathan, recipient of several national and international recognitions including the Padma Vibushan and Magsasay Award.

He especially recalled Swaminathan having spoken about climate change as early as 1969. Stalin recalled Swaminathan's contributions to the country's green revolution in the 1960s and heaped praises on the late scientist for his work. The veteran scientist died last month.

About MS Swaminathan

The legendary agricultural scientist and a key architect of the country’s ‘Green Revolution,’ passed away at his residence in Chennai on September 28, 2023, at 11.20 am, following age-related issues. He was 98.

He was a former chief scientist of the World Health Organisation; Madhura Swaminathan, professor, economic analysis unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Bengaluru and former chairperson, MSSR. His wife, Mina Swaminathan, who was the Distinguished Chair, of Gender and Development, M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), died in March 2022.

His keen interest in agricultural science coupled with his father’s participation in the freedom movement and Mahatma Gandhi’s influence inspired him to pursue higher studies in the subject.
