UGC requested the HEIs to encourage students and staff to participate in Fit India Week and make this programme a grand success.

UGC requests HEIs to celebrate

University Grants Commission has written to the Higher Education Institutes to celebrate the "Fit India Week" from November 15 to December 15, 2023.

The FIT India Movement was launched on August 29, 2019, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the aim to make fitness an integral part of our daily lives. The mission of the movement is to bring about behavioural changes and move towards a more physically active lifestyle. 

"To further extend the success of the program and to diversify its reach to a wider range of participants, the program has been rechristened as "FIT India Week" and is scheduled to be celebrated between November 15 and December 15, 2023," reads the official notification.

During this period, HEIs have been asked to choose a week at their convenience and organize various sports and fitness activities for 4 to 6 days. The activities that could be organized during the FIT India week include the celebration of the Annual Sports Day, added the official statement. 

The Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education has taken the initiative to implement the movement with the following objectives:

  • Sensitizing students and creating awareness amongst them to remain fit and adopt ways to remain fit, including healthy food habits.
  • HEIs to have fitness programmes as Co-Curricular or Extra Curricular activities.
  • To inculcate the culture of games and sports in all Higher Educational Systems and to organize and participate in sports events and tournaments.
  • Each HEIs to have adequate facilities for at least some sports and games.
  • HEIs to have primary health care/wellness centres.
