UGC tells HEIs to appoint Ombudspersons before December 31

University Grants Commission (UGC) has once again requested the universities to appoint an Ombudsperson promptly as per the University Grants Commission (Redressal of Grievances of Students) Regulations 2023 in the Official Gazette on April 11, 2023 (available on the UGC website).

UGC said that the universities should comply with the regulations by establishing the Students Grievance Redressal Committee (SGRC). As per the Commission, the matter is being viewed seriously and the universities must appoint an Ombudsperson (S) and implement other provisions of UGC Regulations on or before December 31, 2023.

After giving multiple opportunities, UGC decided to publish the names of defaulting universities on the website of UGC after December 31, 2023.

"In case a defaulting University desires to make a representation against inclusion of its name in the list of defaulting universities, it may be sent to the Secretary, University Grants Commission, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, New Delhi - 110002, before December 31, 2023," reads UGC notification.

UGC urges to create Selfie Points

The universities and institutes are asked to create selfie points within the colleges to create awareness among youth about India's achievements in various fields, particularly the new initiatives under the NETP 2020. The themes for the selfie points include a broad spectrum of national initiatives such as Ek Bharat Shresth Bharat and major thrust areas of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

"The Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) may place the Selfie Points set up only as per the approved designs in 3D layout at a strategic place within the campus. These selfie points will not only serve as a source of pride but also enlighten every citizen about the transformative initiatives that have propelled India's growth on the global stage. You are requested to encourage students and visitors to capture and share these special moments on social media platforms, fostering a sense of collective pride," added UGC.
