Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu: Schools, colleges to remain shut in these dists

Rainfall is expected to hit several parts of the state till November 13. School holiday has been declared in Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Karur, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Ariyalur and other districts of Tamil Nadu.

Schools and colleges will remain shut in 23 districts of Tamil Nadu today (November 12) due to heavy rainfall in the state. Rainfall is expected to hit several parts of the state till November 13.  

School holiday has been declared in Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Karur, Pudukottai, Perambalur, and Ariyalur districts. ANI tweeted, “Tamil Nadu | Due to heavy rains, the holiday has been declared in schools and colleges in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Thiruvallur, Villupuram, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nilgiris on Nov 12. So far, schools &colleges in 23 districts will be closed tomorrow due to rain."  

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Delta districts as the low-pressure area persists over the South-West Bay of Bengal off the coast of Sri Lanka. On November 9, it issued a predicted heavy rain warning for Tamil Nadu. The IMD tweeted, “Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls & thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal during 09th-13th November, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh during 11th-13th and over Kerala & Mahe on 12th & 13th.” 

Many areas in Tamil Nadu including Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Kancheepuram, Chennai and Tiruvallur witnessed 7 and 11 cm of rainfall while regions received moderate rainfalls. On Friday evening, Tiruvallur district collector informed about the school closure in his district. He tweeted, “Due to continuous rains and the forecast, holiday declared for schools and colleges in Tiruvallur district for tomorrow."
