IGNOU Launches 'Swayam Prabha' Channel in Manipuri Language to Localized Education
IGNOU has launched Swayam Prabha channel in Manipuri language that telecasts educational programmes. The inauguration of this channel-based counseling initiative was done by Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, the Minister of State for External Affairs and Education.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced the Swayam Prabha channel in Manipuri language. It will offer a group of 40 DTH channels, broadcasting educational programmes on 24X7 basis using the GSAT-15 satellite. The minister of state for external affairs and education, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, launched the channel-based counselling initiative in Manipuri.
The decision to incorporate Manipuri was made for learners who prefer to be taught in their native language. The initiative aims to widen educational access for individuals residing in remote regions with limited educational resources. The university stated that fresh content will be telecasted for a minimum of four hours daily, repeated five times throughout the day for the convenience of students.
As per the press release, over 700 students, educationists, media persons, vice-chancellor and pro-vice chancellors of IGNOU, and other senior officers attended the event to promote Manipuri language. Union Minister of State RK Ranjan Singh also inaugurated IGNOU's newly established studios at the Regional Centre Imphal, dedicated to live transmissions of Swayam Prabha programmes.
The minister of state for external affairs and education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh said, โThe National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes on teaching in the mother tongue and the initiative of IGNOU in channel-based teaching in the mother tongue is seen as a major intervention in this direction. He further added, โinauguration of channel-based counselling in Manipuri language will open up opportunities of education in mother tongue for the large population of Manipuri diaspora living in other parts of the worldโ.
