Despite a few measures from the government especially for final year students, Ukraine returned medical students are still protesting and demanding accommodation in Indian medical colleges.

The plight of Ukraine-returned medical students continue

While a few nations have offered accommodation to Indian Ukraine returned medical students to their medical universities and the National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed a two-year internship to final year students after completing FMGE, the protesting students are not satisfied with the measures. The students are not keen on going to another country again and they are more interested in completing the remaining part of their MBBS from Indian medical colleges.

Moreover, for first and second-year students, the government wants them to appear for the NEET 2022 entrance examination and secure a seat as per their merit. However, the students are reportedly not welcoming this advice as well. On June 26, Sunday, about 35 Ukraine returned medical students sat on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar to demand the continuation of education in India.

A student body representing these students has written a letter to the National Medical Commission (NMC) to demand accommodation in medical colleges in India considering the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The students reportedly have been told by NMC to wait for a final decision till July 8 as the commission said that the matter is under consideration and soon a decision regarding the same will be uploaded on the NMC website, as reported by Indian Express.

Demand to study in India continues

The students and their parents have been protesting and demanding accommodation at Indian medical colleges. Some of the related tweets are:

"If 15k students can't be accommodated in India having 600+ Medical Colleges, then how is it possible for smaller nations which have few Medical Colleges. @NMC_IND please think & act positively so that all students could be accommodated in India @narendramodi @MoHFW_INDIA"

"Very sensitive issue. Please help Ukraine returned Medical Students.we all parents are requesting to our honourable Prime minister sh Modi ji. Please do something @PMOIndia @narendramodi @dpradhanbjp @mansukhmandviya #Accommodate_in_India #AdmissionInIndiaOnly"

"Your Excellency the Prime Minister of India please help the Ukraine war-torn returned medical students to continue their education in India. Sir now 4 months completed but no response from any authorities. All other countries accommodated their children in their own countries"
