A snippet of a sociology textbook is making rounds on the internet due to its disgraceful content on the 'merits of dowry'. Despite years of struggle by women, this is what the 2022 textbooks have to offer for the upcoming generation. According to various social media users, the page is from a Textbook of Sociology for Nurses by T K Indrani. It has a section under the subhead, "Merits of Dowry". The book is a reading material for nursing students and its cover says it is written as per the Indian Nursing Council syllabus.

Advantages of Dowry

The snippet explains how dowry is helpful in establishing a new household and how it is helpful to set up appliances, furniture, utensils, and clothes in a house. It further claims that dowry is an 'indirect way for the girl to avail a share in the family's property.'

Stating that dowry promotes education, the snippet says that because of dowry, some parents have actually started getting their girls educated. "When the girls are educated or even employed, the demand for dowry will be less. Thus this is an indirect advantage," it read.

It added, "Ugly looking girls can be married off with attractive dowry with well or ugly looking boys."

Member of Parliament Priyanka Chaturvedi Reacts

The controversial excerpts raised many eyebrows. Member of Parliament Priyanka Chaturvedi raised the matter and urged Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to remove such books from circulation.

The Shiv Sena leader pointed out that the existence of a textbook elaborating the merits of dowry in the curriculum is a 'shame for the nation and its constitution.'
