Ukraine returned medicos to sit on 5-day hunger strike from tomorrow

The Parents Association of Ukraine MBBS Students (PAUMS) has said that nearly 5,000 students and parents from 26 States will participate in the hunger strike from July 23 to July 27.

"Due to war for more than four months in Ukraine, MBBS education has been hampered. As time goes by, students and parents are going through depression, anxiety and many mental issues. Our demand from the Government of India is to accommodate all students in Indian medical colleges," reads the PAUMS statement, as reported by Daily Pioneer.

The association said that their multiple protests and a letter to Prime Minister's Office (PMO) saw no positive outcome as of now. Last month also the students sat on hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for getting admission to Indian medical colleges.

"We protested at Jantar Mantar thrice and twice at the National Medical Commission (NMC) office in Dwarka. We also submitted our demand-cum-request letter to the PMO, Health Ministry, Education Ministry, NMC and the President of India. But no assurance has been given to date. Students have now decided to sit on a hunger strike," the statement added.

Accommodating Ukraine returned medicos is under consideration, says NMC

While responding to an RTI query, the National Medical Commission (NMC) said that accommodating foreign medical graduates was under consideration and no other requests will be entertained at the moment, as reported by Edex live.

Many countries including Russia offered to accommodate these Indian medical students but the students want to continue their medical education in India only as a one-time measure. Meanwhile, after Supreme Court asked NMC to make a scheme to accommodate these students, the medical education regulatory body NMC proposed a two-year internship after clearing FMGE.
