WB medical seats to Ukraine returned medical students not allowed, says NMC

While West Bengal has allowed Ukraine returned medical students to complete their practical training in state colleges, Central officials say it is not allowed.

Recently, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced to accommodate Ukraine returned medical students to the medical colleges of the state. The state allowed seventy-seven first-year students to attend practical classes at 17 different medical colleges in the state. Despite, the fact that there are no such provision in the National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines to do so, the state has also allotted seats to second and third-year medical students who returned from Ukraine.

Now, the central officials including from NMC and Health Ministry have told the Indian Express that the students who will complete their medical education in this manner would not be allowed for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) screening test.

“Any decision about medical students from Ukraine has to come from NMC. The current guidelines are very clear. These students (from Bengal who choose to attend practical classes in government colleges) will not be eligible for FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduates Exam),” an NMC official said.

Ukraine returned medicos demand to study in India

The medical students who returned from Ukraine are continuing with their demands to allow them to study in India. The Supreme Court has also directed NMC on April 29 to frame a scheme within a period of two months for these students. The Ukraine MBBS Student's Parents Association (UMSPA) is also actively protesting and demanding relief for these students.
