Indian Railways is reviewing the non-safety category vacant posts so that additional safety posts can be created. Read this article to get complete details.

Indian Railways is reviewing its policy on the creation of posts. Railway board has approved in an ‘Action Plan for Economic Measure and Rationalisation of Expenditure’, decisions such as freezing of new posts creation except for safety category posts till further notification, posts created in the last two year and recruitment has not been done against these posts and reviewing the same for surrendering, giving up the existing vacancies other than safety category.

The recent tweet by the Ministry of Railways reads, “Indian Railways is not going to surrender any safety category posts required for train operations and maintenance. The review is being done only for non-safety category vacant posts so that additional safety posts can be created for new Railway Infrastructure Projects being developed at fast speed.”

Further, the Ministry has also assured that all ongoing recruitment drives for selection against different categories of posts will as usual. There will not be any job cuts however, profiles might change.

Understanding the safety and non-safety category posts

In 2018, recruitment of 1.4 lakh vacancies had begun. Out of these vacancies, 72,274 vacancies are safety category posts and 68,366 are non-safety category posts. The safety and non-safety category posts are given below.

Safety Category posts

Assistant Loco Pilots

Loco Pilots (Goods/Mail/Passenger)/ Loco Pilot (Shunting)

Loco Inspectors/Driving Instructors

Power Controller/ Traction Loco Controller/ Traction Power Controller/ Traction Sub-station Operator

Crew Controllers in all grades

SSEs/JEs of Open Line and Workshops including loco sheds & depots

Technicians (including Sr. Technicians) 

SPA/Machine, Pump, Compressor Operator

Assistants in Level-1

Non-Safety category posts

Ministerial Category Posts such as Stenographer, Translator, PGT/TGT/PRT Teacher, Cook, etc.

Commercial Clerks like Commercial cum Ticket Clerk and Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Commercial Apprentice

All office staff, staff in the stores and a/cs dept - Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, etc

Is there any guidelines with respect to approval of official language department of Railway board before surrender of non safety Hindi posts in Indian railways?
