We can study during the lapse of nature at Kumaun University, Nainital.
Placements: Our course does not provide a placement facility. Even so, we got to know that once, Doordarshan conducted a test at our university and a girl from the department was selected. It has not been conducted exclusively by our department for its students. Students do get some help in getting an internship, which is compulsory for the third semester. Otherwise, it is just on the students to find jobs.
Infrastructure: The university is huge. It has multiple departments and a good infrastructure. The library is huge. The classrooms are also good, and a few of them are very well ventilated. The auditorium is huge and has a good stage and sound system. The university even has a small museum to learn more about Uttarakhand. There are three hostels for girls and one for boys. The food quality is fine, but not good. You get food twice a day, and you need to give your name for food in the afternoon only if a minimum number of students want to be in the mess. The hostel now has a Wi-Fi facility as well.
Faculty: There were two professors, two Ph.D. students who taught us as well, and one staff member in our department. Faculty members are good and highly qualified. As a student of journalism, we needed more practical knowledge and fieldwork experience, which were not present. Our study was more practical. Teachers did conduct various workshops in the department, but the lack of practical activities means they could not be filled with them. Even though the curriculum is good, it does not make us as students ready for the media industry in the true sense.
Other: I chose the course to learn about the workings of the media and expected to experience some of it in college, but that did not happen. So I believe if our department had the equipment to teach us even the basics of camera functioning or how news is read, said, etc., it would have been beneficial. If not in the department, we should at least have been taken to some media house to get some first-hand experience or any experience to bring us closer to the life of a journalist. The campus crowd is fine. Fest did happen last year, but not when I was part of the university as one year of regular college and one year away because of the corona. The college does not have a Wi-Fi connection. Scholarships are available for certain groups of students. There is an NCC at the university.
