TIFR Mumbai AdmissionsWhat’s new?
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai offers Phd and Integrated M.Sc - Ph.D and pure M.Sc programmes to students. The programmes offered are in the subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer & Systems Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability) and Science Education.

Minimum eligibility requirements
For admissions to PhD programmes, students must hold an M.A./M.Sc./M.Tech degree.
For integrated PhD programmes, students must have completed their B.A./B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech/B.Pharm/B.V.Sc/MBBS/BDS degrees.
For some programmes, duration of the degree pursued by the candidate to be eligible for the programme will be taken into consideration.
Aspirants who do not have Master's degree and are admitted to a Ph.D./Int. Ph.D. program can receive an M.Sc. degree in some subjects by fulfilling certain requirements stated by the institute.
Note: Aspirants are advised to thoroughly go through the eligibility criteria as mentioned by TIFR for the course in which they wish to secure admission. The eligibility criteria might vary from programme to programme.
Admission Process
Admissions to all the programmes offered by TIFR (except science education) is based on a written test conducted by the institute. However, the institute also accepts GATE / NET / JEST scores for admissions to Physics.
Students who get shortlisted will be called for interviews which is generally held from Feb to April every year. Candidates will be intimated by email.
TIFR holds another exam for admissions to its Biology courses. The entrance exam for Biology is the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS).
The institute also accepts GATE scores for admissions to system science programmes. If the student has appeared for both TIFR and GATE exam, the better of the two performances will be considered.
Application Process
Students can apply online as well manually for admissions to TIFR.
Online applications: The link to apply online can be found on the official website. Students are required to read the instructions very carefully. Multiple registrations for the same programme will not be accepted. Students can pay the application fee online via internet banking/ Debit/Credit Card or DD (write your names, reference code and telephone number behind the DD).
Manual applications: Students applying manually are supposed to send a request for application form (without DD) along with a self-addressed stamped (Rs 20/-) envelope (size 25cm x 17cm) super-scribed "GS-2017 (Subject)" to:
For Biology:

Students should send the completed application forms along with DD and two passport size photographs (one pasted on the application and one stapled to it) to the above mentioned addresses.
For science education programmes, students need to visit the HBCSE website.
Application Fee (Non-Refundable):
- Male Candidates: Rs 600/- for online applications and Rs 650/- for manual applications.
- Female Candidates: Rs 100/- for online and manual applications.
Admit Card
Admit cards will be issued prior to the date of the entrance exams by the respective departments. They need to log on to the admission portal of the institute to download and take a print of the admit card.
Students must carry their admit cards to the examination center and present it to the invigilator.
Admission Cycle
- Nationwide Entrance Examination: December second week, 2017
- Hall Ticket download link will be active from: Second week on November, 2017
- Last date for application: October second week, 2017
- Online payment link will be active upto: October third week, 2017
- DDs sent by post/courier will be accepted upto: October third week, 2017
- Interviews for shortlisted candidates: End-February to Early-April, 2017
- Result announcement: January last week, 2017
- GATE Scored based applications to Systems Science (including Communications and Applied Probability): February first week to two weeks after GATE 2017 results declared.
International student admissions
Overseas applicants can write to the Admissions Co-ordinator, Subject Board of Physics, (sbp@theory.tifr.res.in) and the Head, Academic Activities (phd@ncbs.res.in) for admissions to physics and biology programmes respectively with the following:
- Physics: Curriculum Vitae, academic records, publications if any, and 3 referrals about the aptitude and qualifications
- Biology: Curriculum Vitae, academic records, publications if any

Yes, you should be able to take the IIT JAM, JEST, and TIFR exams in 2027 if you graduated in August 2024, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria for each exam

Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. Programs in Mathematics are housed at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
The process of entrance consists of taking an entrance written test followed by an interview for the successful candidates. The written test cut-off marks will be set separately for Ph.D.
