We help students understand the culture, traditions and challenges of modern life, says Anthropology Professor

In a conversation with Shiksha.com, Vellore Institute of Technology, Andhra Pradesh, Anthropology Professor Madhulika talks about the teaching methodology the institute adopts for its BBA programme. She explains that the methodology is experimental and focuses on higher-order thinking. Madhulika believes in learning beyond classroom boundaries and hence, their students undergo live projects on fields so they can put their theoretical skills into practice. She is a trained Anthropologist having diverse experience in academics, research and fieldwork. Her research interest includes Ethnography, Social Anthropology, Forced Migration and Tribal Development. She has also worked with different tribal communities across India.

Read the excerpts of the interview below:

Q: What are the salient features of the teaching methodology adopted by your college? How does this differ from others?

A: I teach Anthropology, Gender Studies and Qualitative Research Methods to BBA and BTech students at VIT-AP University. In VIT-AP School of Business (VSB) we offer unique liberal arts and STEM courses as a foundation for BBA. Subjects such as Anthropology, Psychology, Critical Thinking, Contemporary Indian English Literature along with environmental studies, statistics, economics, Python and so on, have really helped my students to understand multiple realities of real-world problems. This helped students to nurture their thinking by relating to different subjects.

One of the interesting methodologies adopted by VSB faculty members in VSB is experiential teaching methodology and focus on higher-order thinking. Students do many assignments and projects, where they apply theoretical concepts to real-life issues. Some of my students have conducted ethnography fieldwork with Toy making communities in Kondapalli, Cotton weavers in Mangalagiri, and Ponchampally weavers in Hyderabad. These helped the students to understand the culture and traditions and challenges of modern life in these communities. Later, students organised an exhibition of unique findings in the university and got feedback from other faculty members.  This kind of training helps students to develop their communication as well as people and analytical skills.  This also enables students to synthesise knowledge and concepts from several disciplines and come up with new ideas to real-world problems.

The teaching methodology we use here in the university is different from other business schools. As faculty members, we spend maximum time with students as a mentor to overcome their academic challenges.

Q: How are you preparing your students to be Industry ready?

A: Students are given rigorous training in the form of workshops and guest lectures with resource persons coming from top companies, universities, IIMs, and government and non-government organisations. One of the biggest achievements by my students is getting paid internship offers from eminent companies in their 1st year’s summer vacation. Furthermore, the summer projects in fieldwork with different communities helped many students to develop interesting business models to start new businesses. One of my students worked on the food habits of locals in Tuni (Andhra Pradesh) which has helped him to start his own restaurant in his hometown.

The rigours of the practical approach to work with the communities and going out of comfort zones on topics that interest students have helped many to prepare themselves for the industry.

The students participate in various extra-curricular and co-curricular activities and volunteer in organising these events from which they learn teamwork, leadership, crisis management, professionalism, business orientation, and planning and execution.

Q: What are the qualities you are looking for in student applicants? What qualities do they need to do well in your course?

A: The qualities we are looking for in student applicants are motivation, determination to learn out of comfort zone, learning for life and not for jobs. Students pursuing high school or equivalent can apply. We prefer candidates who are curious, self-motivated and open to learning.

To do well in my course, they should be willing to take up challenges working with unexplored or unknown communities and doing something innovative. Subjects such as anthropology and gender studies can be best understood and internalised if students work on the topics in real-world problems and apply the concepts they learned in the classroom.

Q: How do you ensure that your course curriculum is up to date and meets industry requirements?

A: The course curriculum is prepared based on the industry requirements and benchmarked against the best universities in Indian and the world. Our curriculum and syllabus are approved by the University of Michigan, Dearborn (UMD) USA. Our Board of Studies includes experts from industry and professors from IIMs, especially those who have experience in liberal arts and contemporary management subjects. We have speakers from industry visiting to interact with our students and faculty. This helps our faculty to understand the industry expectations and fine-tune the syllabus, pedagogy and assignments/projects.

Q: Is your college receptive to innovation, technology, science & entrepreneurship? How? Could you cite some examples of these?

A: VIT-AP University indeed is receptive to innovation, technology, science and entrepreneurship.

BBA curriculum includes STEM subjects. Innovative ideas are incubated by the university, where students can develop the prototype and fine-tune the business model and start the business. BBA students and B Tech students can collaborate for coming with new products that are viable and have market potential.  VSB organise a number of workshops to prepare them to manage well in the jobs, choose job or start startups in a righteous manner.

Absolutely dissatisfied because of faculty.

Faculty: Another of the worst things is faculty as mentors to the students. Faculty up to the teaching and evaluation is okay. But when we came to get leaves from mentors, they didn't know how to communicate with the parents. This makes a student suicidal.

Absolutely satisfied with the campus and environment.

Faculty: Our teachers are very helpful and qualified. They are from IITs. Their teaching is very good. Sometimes they speak in Telegu but we can ask doubts. Semester exams are moderate. Our syllabus is easy. Our lecture notes are mailed to us so we can learn from them.

Review of VIT-AP University.

Faculty: Faculty members are good, I'd say. Some are very bad, some are excellent. So you have to talk to your seniors before you select the faculty during FFCS. You have 3 exams: CAT (Continuous Assessment Test) 1 and 2 and FAT (Final Assessment Test). Both CAT's have a certain weightage, which contributes to your CGPA.

VIT-Andhra Pradesh: A well reputed private university.

Faculty: The faculty are well qualified. Most of them have completed their PhDs from well-reputed institutions across India and all around the globe. The college curriculum helps students to pursue their interests. There are various elective courses for students to dive into technology.

VIT Andhra Pradesh is at its best from now.

Faculty: Most of the faculty members are nice and helpful, and you can clear any of your doubts regarding anything. They help you with that. The course material is selected by the teachers to make it as relevant for the students as possible. The course material covers all the fundamentals for all the topics and makes you ready for any problems in the topic. The semester exam criteria for passing is 40 percent in the Final Assessment Tests (FATs).

A decent college with good infrastructure and better studies.

Faculty: The curriculum for our course consists of 120 credits, and the subjects are mostly about our future roles in the company. The rating for the faculty in our college would be 3 out of 5. The difficulty of the semester exams is high compared to other colleges .

Good campus, good placement, but the campus is a little far away from the city.

Faculty: The teachers are good and are even supportive. The student-to-teacher ratio is very high. Like in each class, there are around 70 students, and exams go on every time. Like you have a quiz of any subject every week, and then there is a mid-term and an end-term.

Got a seat at VIT-Andhra Pradesh University. This is exactly why you should grab this opportunity!

Faculty: Most of the faculty members here are good and know how to teach the subject, not how to mug things up. We might not feel that the courses are well aligned with modern-day requirements. As soon as we enter the 2nd year, we will need to attend the subjects which are very important from an interview point of view. Throughout the semester, we will have to attend four exams. 2 mid-sems, a sem-end, and a lab practical exam. Mid-sems are for 50 marks and the rest are for 100 marks. Something that we ne...

Fully satisfied with the college along with good placements, a good campus, and nice exposure.

Faculty: All the teachers are well-educated and highly qualified from IITs and NITs. They teach really well. The exam curriculum is well-organized, with enough time to study. Students really enjoy the campus life. Semester-end exams are the toughest, where we need to study hard throughout the semester but they are manageable.

Every thing you should know everything about VIT Andhra Pradesh before you get in!

Faculty: Most of the faculty members here are good. Obviously, there would be some exceptions like there always are. Four exams take place in total throughout a semester, three theory and one lab practical. Out of the three, two are called CAT and the later and the final one is called FAT. The course curriculum alligns very much with the requirements of jobs in today's world. A catch though is, you need 80 percent of attendance to sit for exam, whereas in other colleges this percentage is around 70. The ...

VIT Andhra Pradesh - an average private college of India.

Faculty: Teachers are highly qualified with at least a Ph.D. degree in their subjects, and the teaching is average for most, except for some professors who are really good. In my course, the subjects are designed according to today's needs, so they are very relevant. Semester exams are taken in 3 terms, and the final one is a bit tough, as we have to study all the subjects.

Definitely a better place to learn, grow, and enjoy compared to the other colleges in Vijayawada.

Faculty: The teachers weren't actually smart, but some of them take their time to actually help students. They discuss the extra stuff and help us gain knowledge while the others are focused on marks. The course curriculum is 10/10. The freedom of choosing our course gives us a brief idea of how helpful it will be in the future. The semester exams were average. Some of them were easy, while some of them are too hard, it depends on the subject and the professor at the end of the day. Most of the time, it'...

Faculty: All teachers are well-qualified and graduated from IITs and NITs. The teaching quality is very good. The course curriculum is relevant and makes students industry-ready. The semester is a bit difficult if we could do some hard work we can manage. Almost 90% is the pass percentage.

Helpful Review for VIT Andhra Pradesh

Faculty: They conduct exams like CAT, FAT, LAB FAT, and THEORY exams each semester. The teaching quality is above average, and their curriculum is of top-notch quality. The semester exams are pretty tough, and you have to study hard if you want to get a 9+ CGPA. They have a minimum of 40 marks out of 100 in FAT exams to pass.
