IIIHM Kolkata organises Star Chef Competition for Class XI-XII students

The IIIHM, a hotel management school of University of Engineering and Management, Kolkata(UEM), recently organised a Star Chef Competition for students of Class XI and Class XII. The event witnessed an active participation of over 500 students from across 100 schools located at Kolkata, Howrah, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Midnapur, Bardhaman, Hooghly and Kharagpur.

The event was aimed at increasing student participation in food programme and generating interest in the hospitality sector. The event also offered the students a chance to develop and sustain their culinary skills and enthusiasm.

The competition was held in two rounds. The first round was called the Non-Fire Cooking Elimination Round where students were divided into groups, each comprising three students. These groups were then given a task to arrange assortments of sandwiches and salads. Sixteen groups, consisting of 48 students were then shortlisted for the second round of the competition. The second round was called Fire Cooking and students were asked to prepare varieties of culinary such as schnitzel, Momowich, Paneer Steak, Egg Benedict, Shepherd Pie with Chicken and more.

In the end, the winner group of the UEM Star Chef Competition 2019 included Shreyshy Srivastava, Bhawna Khanna and Zeba Khan of St Agnes School, Kharapur. The winners received a cash prize of Rs 15,000.

The event was judged by Chef Debjeet, while Chef Srijani Sikdar and Chef Kallol Majumdar were co-judging the event. The result of the competition was decided basis cooking methodology and procedures, hygiene maintained during cooking, appearance, presentation of the final product, garnish and taste of the product. All the chefs guided and urged the students to plan and innovate new dishes and culinary techniques.
