My Unconventional Journey: From Commerce Student to Content Writer
There were three options in front of me: science, commerce, and the arts, from which I could choose when I cleared my board exams. I don’t want to be an engineer or doctor, so I didn’t choose science, and of course, my hatred for math didn’t allow me to choose science. So, I chose the commerce stream, which was all new to me, and to my surprise, it had math subjects in it. We had such a great, loveable bond that Math does not want to leave me.
In 2014, I cleared my 12th grade with an 80 percentage and was all set to start my college life. As I was born and brought up in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, I didn’t have many choices when choosing which college to attend for my graduation. I filled out forms for 3–4 colleges, and I finalised my decision to do my further studies at Karim City College by opting for B.com, as it was not too far from my house.
I was not at all confused about choosing my subject because, just like a flock of sheep, everyone told me to do B.Com. As all the commerce students do the same, aside from that, I also chose B.Com. Because, until then, accounting had become my favourite subject, and I wanted to study that subject more and more. I actually wanted to pursue my studies in the computer field, but there was no option to choose computers as a subject in the commerce stream.
Q: Can you tell me if Karim City College is a quality educational institution?
Let me tell you something about my college. Karim City College is affiliated with Kolhan University in Chaibasa, and the college infrastructure was way better than the other colleges that I was considering. It also has a huge library with separate reading rooms for both students and teachers, along with a canteen for snacks. There are no hostel facilities for students. There are common rooms for boys and girls if they have a break in between their lectures. The commerce stream and arts stream classes start from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m.
The first time I entered my college to get admission, I looked everywhere and everything, even the plants on the edge of the wall. The admissions process was hassle-free. I went to the office, and the person sitting on the other side of the counter gave me an application form and briefly made me understand what documents I had to submit and when. Everything went smoothly, and finally, my first day at college came.
On my first day of college, I attended my first lecture, sitting on the first bench, as I had never been a backbencher until the first week of college. My first lecture was on commerce given by our Commerce HOD. College life is very different from school life. The transition from school life to college life is so sudden that we’re no longer protected by our teachers and friends from our school time, we mature quickly. The first week of college was really nice, just like in the movies; the unfamiliar faces are now friends, and a group was created that used to hang out in the canteen after the lecture.
At KCC, the faculty was really helpful during exam time, and that was the first thing I liked about my college. Another aspect of my college experience that I enjoyed was attending annual festivals. Every year, our college organises an annual festival that lasts for 2-3 days. In this annual festival, multiple competitions take place, and students from several colleges come to be a part of it. Every year, my group and I used to wait for the festival so that we could get an excuse to bunk lectures.
Academically, the college offers various UG and PG courses. No internship is provided by the college. The placement is not particularly good because only a few companies come to campus to recruit, and very few salary packages are offered. During my placement, a few local BPO companies, ICICI, and Danik Jagran came to recruit students, and the minimum salary offered was 1.2 LPA. Only a few top students got selected, and unfortunately, I was not one of them.
I passed out of college in 2017, and after so many years, whenever I visit my hometown, I cross my college area every time, and seeing students wearing college uniforms, and holding projects, and those tensed faces reminds me of my college days.
