What is Sports Science?

Sports science, or sport science, is a synthesis of many different disciplines and is primarily concerned with the scientific principles of exercise performance. It brings together commercial and managerial abilities with scientific disciplines including physiology, psychology, biomechanics, and nutrition to generate graduates who are qualified for positions in a variety of industries. Sport science's core area of study is the connection between physical activity and the human body, both at the cellular level and in terms of how it affects the body as a whole.

Recent years have seen a tremendous rise in the popularity of degree programmes in sports science, and new research on how exercise and other stimuli affect the human body is changing how athletes train and condition themselves.

What will you find in a Sports Science Course?

Sports Science course mainly talks about subjects like Psychology, Biomechanics, Physiology and nutrition. It introduces students to various branches of science that bring a relationship between the human body and exercise. Students in sports science will gain knowledge of physiology, psychology, neurophysiology, biomechanics, biochemistry, psychophysiology, anatomy, biokinetics, muscle mechanics, and immunology over the course of their degree programme. As a result of their exposure to these various fields, sports science students have a broad base of knowledge that will aid them in choosing the career path that would be most suitable for them. 

If you are pursuing B.Sc. in Sports Science, the course has a duration of 3 to 4 years. Throughout the syllabus, you will understand more scientific ways related to the mechanics and principles of Sports Science. B.Sc in Sports Science strikes a balance between theoretical and practical work. Independent study and research are used to supplement lectures and seminars, and laboratory work and practical exercise sessions are used to put information into practice. There are many different ways that sports science courses are evaluated, but the majority include a dissertation in the final year of study. The other primary methods of assessment include written and practical exams, essays, and lab reports.

Why study Sports Science?

The majority of sports science courses demand that the prospective students have taken at least one science-based subject in high school. Physical education, chemistry, and physics are all useful and would provide a strong basis for a prospective student of sports science, but biology is likely the most valuable course.

The course not only helps you understand sports performance, but also recovery after injury, well-being, fitness, and a lot more about the health of the human body. Playing sports in a well-developed manner is more important which students need to understand. Thus, sports science will help you a lot in sports-related fields. Prior to enrolling in a sports science study, there are numerous options to gain job experience in a related field, such as assisting at a sports club, participating in outdoor activities, or even working at a gym.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must have cleared their PUC with PCMB subjects with a minimum aggregate score of 45% (40% in case of Candidates belonging to SC/ST) from any recognised board/council or any other equivalent qualification from a recognised board.

This programme lay s the foundation for a deeper understanding and application of the science behind sports performance, exercise, health and physical activity. This is a four-year full-time application-based programme with a unique blend of theory and practical components.

Jobs and Career Options

You may not become the next Ussain Bolt or Elaine Thompson-Herah if you do this course, but a degree in Sports Science course will definitely take you to an interesting and rewarding career. The main career options include personal trainer, fitness instructor, or leisure centre manager. There are also options for becoming a PE teacher or a lecturer or even a sports therapist which helps injured athletes back on track. Other career options include sports management and marketing, professional sports coaching, research and development and sports science professionals like Physiologists, biomechanists, Psychologists, nutritionists and performance analysts.
