The Importance of Materials Science and Engineering in Every Domain
Materials are the building blocks of every product around us. Hence, choosing the appropriate material for each application in different sectors is of paramount importance. It is essential to make the right material selection for conventional, engineering, and specialty applications to produce products with the desired performance. For instance, soft materials are needed for sofas and cushions, while hard, non-bending type materials are required for bicycles. The temperature range at which the product will be used must also be considered. For example, the non-stick pan is exposed to high-temperature flames, while the ice tray going into the refrigerator is below freezing temperature. The performance of the product depends on the material selected.
A vast array of materials such as glass, ceramic, metals, and polymers are available, and each group has different grades of compositions. A thorough understanding of these materials is necessary to make an informed decision. After the material selection, it is crucial to learn how to fabricate the product using the material. It may be necessary to modify the material with additives, blending, and alloying to fine-tune the properties and match them to the desired specifications.
MIT WPU Admissions 2024 Open - Apply Now
Each of the materials may not be readily available for the application. One may have to modify it to make it suitable for the application. For example, in the car bumper manufacturing industry, the right material must be chosen from a variety of options available like rubber, plastic, fibers, and additives, which must be mixed and molded to obtain all the desired properties such as impact strength, passing the crash test, and withstanding outdoor exposure. Extensive research is going on in the field of materials to design and achieve the desired properties for a variety of applications.
