Q:   Is IIHM Kolkata good for MBA?

A:

Determining whether IIHM Kolkata is a good option for an MBA depends on your specific goals and priorities. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons to help you decide:

Pros:

  • Industry Focus: IIHM's MBA programs specifically cater to the hospitality and tourism industry,  offering an in-depth understanding of its unique dynamics and challenges.
  • Specialized Curriculum: The curriculum integrates core MBA subjects with industry-specific courses in hotel management,  revenue management,  marketing,  and operational aspects. This provides practical knowledge relevant to your future career in hospitality.
  • Strong Industry Connections: IIHM boasts strong relationships with hotels,  travel agencies,  and tourism organizations,  facilitating internships and potential job placements for MBA graduates.
  • Experienced Faculty: The faculty comprises industry professionals and academic experts,  offering real-world insights and practical guidance alongside theoretical knowledge.
  • International Exposure: IIHM encourages international exchange programs and collaborations,  providing opportunities to broaden your perspective and gain global business acumen.

Cons:

  • Limited Scope: Unlike a general MBA,  IIHM's programme specifically focuses on the hospitality industry,  restricting career options to this sector. Consider if you prefer broader opportunities across various industries.
  • Higher Cost: The tuition fees and living expenses in Kolkata can be higher compared to other MBA programs. Evaluate your financial situation and scholarship options carefully.
  • Smaller Alumni Network: Compared to established business schools,  IIHM's alumni network might be smaller,  potentially limiting the scope of professional contacts and career guidance.
  • Competitive Environment: The competitive student body and high expectations can be stressful for some individuals. Prioritize your well-being and focus on personal growth.

Q:   Can I join IIHM Kolkata directly?

A:

Whether you can join IIHM Kolkata directly depends on what you mean by "directly." Here are the two main possibilities:

1. Direct Admission without entrance exam:

Unfortunately, direct admission without taking the IIHM Aptitude Test (IIHM-AT) is not typically possible for the Bachelor of Hotel Administration (BHA) programme at IIHM Kolkata. The IIHM-AT score plays a significant role in the selection process, alongside your WBCHSE marks and any additional assessments.

However, there might be limited exceptions in specific situations, such as:

  • International students: International applicants might be considered for direct admission based on their academic qualifications and standardized test scores (e.g.,  SAT,  ACT) in some cases.
  • Transfer students: Students transferring from other accredited hospitality programs with excellent academic records might be eligible for direct admission after a thorough evaluation.
  • Exceptional achievements: If you have demonstrably exceptional achievements in relevant fields like sports,  music,  or entrepreneurship,  IIHM might consider offering direct admission after reviewing your portfolio and potential contribution to the institute.

It's crucial to remember that these exceptions are rare and subject to IIHM's discretion. The most guaranteed path to joining the BHA programme at IIHM Kolkata is to apply through the regular process, which involves meeting the eligibility criteria, taking the IIHM-AT, and following the standard selection procedure.

2. Joining a shorter course or Diploma program:

If you're looking for a quicker way to enter the hospitality industry, IIHM Kolkata offers various shorter courses and Diploma programs in specialised areas like food production, bakery & confectionery, hotel operations, and event management. These programs might involve direct admission based on your academic qualifications and an interview or written test.

Therefore, your ability to join IIHM Kolkata directly depends on your specific situation and the programme you're interested in. I recommend contacting the IIHM Kolkata admissions office directly to explore your options and obtain accurate information about eligibility and application procedures for both the BHA programme and any shorter courses that might interest you.

Q:   Does IIHM Kolkata refund fees?

A:

IIHM Kolkata's refund policy is limited and adheres to specific conditions mentioned in their student contract.

  • No Refunds for Completed Courses: Once a student enrolls and starts attending classes, a full or partial fee refund is generally not permissible.

  • Cooling-Off Period: They offer a seven (7) day cooling-off period after signing the student contract. During this timeframe, a student can submit a completed "Pre-Course Commencement Withdrawal & Refund Form" to initiate the withdrawal process.

    • If the request falls within this window, IIHM states they will refund the entire course fee paid by the student.
  • Post Course Commencement: After the seven-day window, the refund scenario becomes stricter. While the official policy doesn't explicitly mention the possibility of a refund in such cases, some exceptions might exist under exceptional circumstances.

A:

Whether IIHM Kolkata is more expensive than NIPS Hotel Management, Kolkata, depends on several factors:

Program and Specialization:

  • The fees for specific BHA specializations can vary within each institute. Some niche areas like Culinary Arts or Bakery & Confectionery might be marginally more expensive at IIHM compared to NIPS.

Additional Charges:

Scholarships and Financial Aid:

  • Explore options for scholarships and financial aid offered by both institutes. IIHM might have a wider network of scholarship possibilities due to its national presence, but NIPS might offer local or merit-based scholarships too. Utilizing such opportunities can significantly reduce the overall cost burden.
