In an effort to increase its national reach, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication established the Northern Regional Centre in Jammu in 2012. The center's first batch of 15 students may be admitted, and it started out of Vikas Bhawan at Railhead Complex. The center offers a one-year PG Diploma programme in English journalism, and in 2022–2023 it will begin offering a PG Diploma programme in Hindi journalism. Gandhi Nagar is home to the hotel and hostel for visiting academic members.

The complex's construction is being handled by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting's Civil Construction Wing (CCW), which is based in Jammu. By the end of the year, the construction will probably have reached its peak. The faculty apartments, administration block, and dorms for boys and girls are located on the permanent campus. It is also suggested that a community radio station be established on campus.
