In a conversation with Shiksha, Chief Executive Officer of LEXICON Group of Institutes Nasir Shaikh talks about the approach institute takes to provide quality education and focus on 360-degree development of its students. He also shares about the industry opportunities that the institute offers in terms of placements, internships and networking.
Read the complete interview below:
Q: What are the three things that your institute is to differentiate itself from competition?
A: Lexicon Management Institute of Leadership and Excellence focuses on inclusive approach which does not have a mindset of competition. We have three areas we put emphasis on:
- Personalisation: We deliver to our students the content through media that is receptive by them. Over two years, the faculty ensures students step out understanding the syllabus and its application.
Application is a key element of any learning and with case study being an integral part of the teaching pedagogy we are able to guide the student to understand the concepts, its purpose and application. In addition, to the PGDM the students complete an additional of over 15 certifications to better equip them for the corporate world.
- Paid internships: In its efforts to have the students to be ready for the corporate world the students undergo a well-monitored and guided paid internship for nine months. Through the internship, industry leaders and the faculty guide, mentor the students to ensure they get maximum learnings from the time invested and experience earned.
- Events and networking: One of the key elements of a post-graduate management programme is to ensure the students are skilled networkers, which means that they need to have opportunities to meet senior leaders and interact with them one on one.
Q: What are the top three initiatives undertaken by you that are helping your students become more industry-ready?
A: In the word of Benjamin Disraeli, ‘One secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes’, and we at Lexicon are firm believers of the same. Our three important areas that ensure students are industry-ready include:
- Paid internships: There is an immense amount of importance and support to given to the students to execute excellence and learn from doing during their internship. Their designated supervisor and the faculty mentor are involved with them through the process. During the internship period the learnings are monitored and evaluated. They are also guided to be self-sufficient and independent through the stipend earnings from the internship.
- Networking and events: Networking is one of the key elements of success for our students which helps them to be industry-ready and be industry-known. The involvement in events allows you to take the opportunity to grow long-lasting relationships with the mentors and the leaders you meet during the events.
- Conclaves: These are a great opportunity for our students to get exposed to ideas from the industry experts and become of aware of best practices and innovation. Here I would like to highlight to you the Innovation Conclave. The students experienced a never before inspirational dialogue by Padmabhushan Dr Vijay Bhatkar (Architect of India’s First Super Computer), Deepak Mhaisekar (IAS–Divisional Commissioner of Pune) along with other dignitaries before the students took the opportunity to showcase their Innovation Lab.
Q: What are the key attributes that a student should have in order to qualify for your institution and get top grades?
A: We believe one’s attitude defines them and in turn, will define us. Hence, one of the key defining attributes is the attitude of the student applying with us. We also believe that if the student has the attitude to learn and grow the rest can be taught through the expertise and guidance of our faculty.
The selection process encompasses the following: - Pan-India selection process to drive diversity and inclusion, a valid score in qualifying exams, GDPI and case study analysis.
An awareness of current and economic trends along with an element of being savvy in the environment they are coupled with self-presentation and pleasant communication skills will get you to be part of our family.
On the other hand, to achieve great results, the students need to allow themselves to be moulded by the faculty and learnings of the programme. At the same time, it is important for them to present their perspectives and views. I personally believe that integrity, ownership and accountability will be the key differentiator between ‘To Be’ or ‘Not To Be’.
Q: Which programmes would you say are your best? What is it that helps your institution differentiate itself for this programme?
A: Currently the students have three programmes to choose from, each providing them with an array of learning and exposure.
First, our PGDM programme elevates you through a blend of academics and paid internship, a well-rounded industry-ready leader.
Second, the Global MBA with the University of South Wales, Wales programme is a joint collaboration with a Credit Weight of 180. This is followed by Global Internship opportunities and final placement.
Third, MBA and MS (Business Analytics) Programme with University of New Haven, Connecticut, the USA allows the student to gain valuable insight, knowledge and exposure through the initial learnings at Lexicon followed by the time spent at the University of New Haven.
Q: What are you doing to drive better campus placements for your current students and alumni? What kind of jobs routinely come to campus? What would you say are the key recruitment trends for your college (observed over the past five years)?
A: Arming our students with a believe-in-yourself attitude, we guide our students in their transition from campus-to-corporate. Previously highlighted activities together with mentorship allow students to have excellent opportunities to choose from.
Job opportunities give the students entry to management and leadership. These range from roles in Sales and Marketing to Marketing Specialist to Learning and Development, Talent Acquisition, Strategic HR, Investment banking, Client Service roles to some taking entrepreneurship route through the channels of our Innovation lab.
Over the past three years, we have seen a 100% campus placement track record with companies, including TIAA, CITCO, BNY Mellon, AXA Business Services, WNS, Jade Global, Knight Frank, JLL, Cushman & Wakefield, Piaggio, Yazaki India, Orient Technologies, Byjus, Extramarks, JaroEducation, ICICI, TATA AIA, HDFC, Kotak, Deloitte, LinkedIn, M&M, among others. Our roles is to ensure that we support the student getting the right opportunities and helping them achieve their professional aspirations.
