6 Anna University-affiliated colleges manage to fill only 10% engineering seats

Experts are of the view that a number of the university’s constituent colleges, which were earlier known for their low fee structure and quality education, have lost popularity in the recent years due to a lack of adequate infrastructure.  

As many as 306 of the 440 engineering institutions in Tamil Nadu filled less than 10 per cent of their seats. This has raised concern among experts as six of the 306 institutes are affiliated with Anna University (AU). 

The New Indian Express reported, at the University VOC College in Thoothukudi, just 36 seats out of 386 were filled, while at the University College of Engineering in Pattukkottai, 33 seats out of 387 were filled. Similarly, of the total 387 seats, University Colleges of Engineering at Panruti, Nagapattinam, and Ramanathapuram managed to fill only 21, 17, and 13 seats, respectively.

Only 11 of the 388 seats at the Ariyalur campus were filled. However, at the end of two rounds, almost 95 per cent of seats at the four AU campuses in Chennai had been filled. According to experts, a number of the university’s constituent colleges, which were earlier known for their low fee structure and quality education, have lost popularity in the recent years due to a lack of adequate infrastructure.

Jayaprakash Gandhi, a career counsellor, agreed that admissions to some of the component colleges had been declining year after year. It is abysmally low this year, as these six universities have only managed to fill 10 per cent of seats after two rounds, the report added. 
Meanwhile, Anna University Vice-Chancellor R Velraj said steps were being taken to address the problem of staff crunch. He said they would soon appoint faculty in all university colleges.
