In the light of rising Covid-19 cases in India, a B Tech student (Electronics Communication and Engineering) at Lovely Professional University (LPU) has designed an IoT device named KAWACH’. Along with his professors, Prabin Kumar Das has developed a pendant to endorse social distancing. The device glows and vibrates if someone breaches the user’s secure space of 1 metre. Moreover, the device also gives handwash reminder that beeps every 30 minutes to prompt the user to wash his or her hands. Apart from this, it has a temperature sensor that warns them through SMS if their body temperature breaches the agreed limit.

Among the staff members at LPU, the research team has successfully held its pilot testing. Now for its commercialization, it is now looking for the right manufacturing partners. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, social distancing is a non-pharmaceutical infection prevention and control step used to evade/reduce interaction between those who are infected with a disease-causing pathogen and those who are not. This can help stop or slow down the rate and magnitude of disease spread in a community.

KAWACH is an easy to use and low-cost device that consists of a Battery, Human Body Temperature Sensor, Ultrasonic Sensor, LED, Vibrator, Controller, Switch and a Storage Card. Apart from this, it also offers a handwash reminder, a very useful tool in these times.
