COVID-19: Jamia Milia Islamia to give psycho-social support to students
The Jamia Milia Islamia has formed a 13-member committee to provide psycho-social support to the students during and after the COVID-19 outbreak.
In order to provide psycho-social support to students during and after the coronavirus outbreak, the Jamia Millia Islamia has formed a 13-member committee. Earlier, the institute had started providing tele-counselling services to the students regarding the same.
To ensure the well-being of students, Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Milia Islamia, has set up a mental health and counselling committee. The committee will provide psycho-social support to students staying in hostels/campus or outside during and after the COVID-19 outbreak, the varsity said in a statement.
The committee will be headed by Professor S M Sajid of Department of Social Work and Professor Naved Iqbal of the Department of Psychology will be its convenor. Dean Students Welfare (DSW), Chief Proctor, OSD (Planning and Development) Faculty members from the Department of Social Work and Psychology, Provost G P Girls Hostel and CMO are members of the committee.
The counselling will be done weekly, face to face or online, till coronavirus persists, initially for three months.
The committee has set up a telephone helpline and has arranged telephonic counselling for all those students who need help and approach it. The Committee is also planning to enlist limited volunteers among research scholars and National Service Scheme (NSS) students for psycho-social support services and will guide them and assign duties by following a system of rotation.
The varsity said that if the situation demands, it may also consult external experts. The committee members will also visit the hostels and other parts of the campus to help students if any extreme conditions arise.
