The decision on holding university and college exams will be taken after the state government announces its decision on the lockdown, SPPU said.

The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has announced that it will take a call on holding university and college examinations for all the institutes affiliated to it, once the state government announces its decision on the coronavirus lockdown.

The colleges in the state will not reopen until the state government issues an order. The order is likely to come after May 3, said Nitin Karmalkar, vice-chancellor, SPPU.

This has been announced after a panel set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) submitted its recommendations on the revised academic calendar and suggestions for holding examinations under lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The commission members are likely to discuss the recommendations through a video-conferencing today and will accordingly issue advisory guidelines for institutions of higher education. Most colleges and universities have not yet held their semester examinations to close out the current academic year.

The responsibility to conduct examinations and the academic calendar was given to the first committee headed by Professor RC Kuhad, former member UGC and vice-chancellor, Central University of Haryana. The second committee under the chairmanship of Professor Nageshwar Rao, Vice-chancellor, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was directed to look into the promotion of online education in the country amid the lockdown.

UGC will issue guidelines in consultation with the ministry of Human resource development following which universities can chalk out their action plan.

Earlier, Savitribai Phule Pune University had announced interim vacation for all its affiliated colleges until April 14. However, after the extension in the lockdown period to May 3 and directive given by the Ministry of Home Affairs, it will remain shut till the lockdown is uplifted.
